The Indian Association Cheltenham (Glos) is a registered charity (No. 293297) and was established by the first generation of Indian emigrants, originating from Gujarat, living in Cheltenham and Gloucester.
It was established on 23rd March 1970 at a meeting held at St Paul's College, attended by 71 people.
The Association’s aim was to preserve our Indian cultural, religious and social identities for future generations.
In the beginning, The Association arranged trips to the seaside and Indian cinema in the Midlands and hired venues for religious and cultural festivals like Navratri and Diwali.
In order for people to meet on a regular basis and carry out more activities The Association decided to buy its own place, The St Paul’s Church Hall in Swindon Road.
The building was bought in 1984 with an urban Aid grant, support from Cheltenham Borough Council and fund raising by the Association members. It was decided to call the building the Hindu Community Centre.
The Cheltenham Krishna Mandir was established and inaugurated in July 1986 providing a place of worship for Hindus in Gloucestershire.
The Temple is open regularly each day from 10.00–11.00 am and 6.00-7.00 pm for worship and the Centre is open for social, cultural, health, educational, sporting and religious activities throughout the year according to their timetable.
